Awards, Recognitions, & Memberships
The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU) is focused on meeting the needs of its community. It succeeds because it serves its neighbors, family, and friends. 2023
2022 Business of the Year (Awarded by the Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce in 2023)
- The Coldwater Area Chamber of Commerce's awarded the CBPU the 2022 Business of the Year award (see submission here) at the 69th Annual Community Awards Dinner in 2023. The Business of the Year award recognizes "a business, small or large, that goes out of its way to become a community partner. [The] business donates time, resources, and leadership to support projects and activities that benefit the community."
Certificate of Excellence in Reliability for 2022 (Awarded by the APPA in 2023)
- The APPA’s Certificate of Excellence in Reliability recognizes utilities in the top quartile (25%) of utilities for the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI), including or excluding IEEE MEDs (Major Event Days) based on the EIA data in 2017 – 2021. The CBPU was 1 of 219 utilities that were awarded the certificate for 2022. You can see a complete list of all recipients here.
Safety Award of Excellence for 2022 (Awarded by the APPA in 2023)
The APPA awarded the Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2022. The CBPU earned First place in Group C for utilities with 30,000 to 59,999 worker-hours of annual worker exposure.
283 utilities from across the country entered the annual Safety Awards. Entrants were placed in categories according to their number of worker-hours and ranked based on incident-free records and overall state of their safety programs and culture during 2022. The incidence rate is based on the number of work-related reportable injuries or illnesses and the number of worker-hours during 2022, as defined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
2022
Excellence in Public Power Communications Excellence Award in Video (Awarded by APPA)
- APPA awarded the CBPU an Excellence in Public Power Communications Excellence Award for their efforts in video production. The CBPU won this award for the videos it created for its We are Public Power campaign. Learn more here.

- APPA awarded the CBPU an Excellence in Public Power Communications Excellence Award for their efforts in Web and Social Media. The CBPU won this award for its We are Public Power campaign. Learn more here.
Smart Energy Provider (Awarded by APPA)
- The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities (CBPU) has earned a Smart Energy Provider (SEP) designation from the American Public Power Association for demonstrating a commitment to and proficiency in energy efficiency, distributed generation, and environmental initiatives that support the goal of providing safe, reliable, low-cost, and sustainable electric service.

System Improvement Honorable Mention at AMP's 2022 Annual Conference
- AMP recognized the CBPU as an Honorable Mention for the System Improvement Award. The honorable mention was given to the CBPU for their efforts to improve and upgrade the cable modem internet in their area to new GIG Fiber Internet. You can view the honorable mention here.
Certificate of Excellence in Reliability for 2021 (Awarded by APPA in 2022)
- The APPA’s Certificate of Excellence in Reliability recognizes utilities with average SAIDI in the top quartile of SAIDI including or excluding Major Event Days(MEDs) based on EIA data in 2016-2020.
The CBPU was one of 199 utilities that were awarded the certificate for 2021. You can see a complete list of all recipients here.
2022 Best of Branch County, Finalist in the Internet/Satellite/Cable Provider category (Recognized by The Daily Reporter)
- The Daily Reporter celebrates and recognizes the best our community has to offer. This award is voted on by the community in a public poll setting. The CBPU is honored to have been a finalist for the Best Internet/Satellite/Cable Provider in Branch County. Learn more here.
2021
Community Strong Award (Awarded by Tantalus)
- Tantalus' gives the Community Strong Award to the utility that best demonstrates how they are supporting a program that makes their community a better place to live.
The CBPU was presented with the Community Strong Award in 2021 for its efforts to make the City of Coldwater a GIG Fiber community through its GIG City Michigan Fiber Ethernet FTTP Project (now known as GIG Fiber Internet).
Diamond Level RP3 Award (Awarded by APPA)
- Recognition by the RP3 program reveals a utility’s commitment to its employees, customers, and community, as well as its dedication to operating and managing an efficient, safe, and reliable power system. The CBPU was recognized as a Diamond Level RP3 Award Recipient in 2021.
The RP3 designation lasts for three years and recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate excellence in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement. There are three possible levels of designation; Gold, Platinum, and Diamond. The Diamond designation signifies that a utility has met over 98 percent of the evaluation criteria.
2020
Smart Energy Provider (Awarded by APPA)
- The APPA awarded the CBPU the Smart Energy Provider designation in 2020.
The Smart Energy Provider (SEP) program recognizes utilities for demonstrating a commitment to and accomplishment in smart energy program planning, energy efficiency and distributed energy resources, environmental and sustainability programs, and communication and customer experience.
Excellence in Public Power Communications Merit Award (Awarded by APPA)
- APPA awarded the CBPU an Excellence in Public Power Communications Merit Award for their efforts in Web and Social Media. The CBPU won this award for its #ThrowbackThursday campaign. You can learn more here.
Safety Award of Excellence (Awarded by APPA)
- APPA gave 129 Utilities the Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices in 2020, with a total of 329 entrants across the country.
The CBPU earned first place in their category (C) for their dedication to safety and their lack of work-related accidents.
2018
Platinum Level RP3 Award
- Recognition by the RP3 program reveals a utility’s commitment to its employees, customers, and community, as well as its dedication to operating and managing an efficient, safe, and reliable power system.
The RP3 designation lasts for three years and recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate excellence in four key disciplines: reliability, safety, workforce development, and system improvement.

The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities is a proud member of several organizations. These include the American Public Power Association, the American Municipal Power Association, the Michigan South Central Power Agency, the Michigan Public Power Agency, and the Michigan Municipal Electric Association.
