The CBPU currently services electricity to over 6,875 residential, commercial, industrial and street lighting customers.  Being a Public Power provider, we ensure safe, reliable, competitive and efficient utility products and services. 

Local Customer Service

To start, stop or change your service, please call our Customer Service Department at (517) 279-9531.  We're available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or come to our office at One Grand Street, Coldwater, MI 49036. 

CBPU electric bills are read each month and billed based off of actual usage.   The charges on an electricity bill are as follows:

• Electric Usage - charges are billed per killowatt hour used
• Electric Base Fee - minimum fee to service your account
• Power Cost Adjustment - an adjustment made on your electric bill, dependent upon what the true cost of power is from MSCPA
• Energy Optimization Fee - as required by Public Act 295 (PA 295)
• Electric Tax - residential accounts are billed 4% and business accounts are billed 6% electric tax

Electric Safety is our top priority.  Remember to never touch a downed power line.  If you see downed line please call 279-9531 immediately!  To report a power outage, please call (517) 279-9531 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

MSPCA Debt Free

In 1978 Coldwater, Union City, Marshall, Hillsdale and Clinton formed the Michigan South Central Power Agency (MSCPA) to provide reliable, value-based electric energy and related services to its member communities and focus on their customer’s needs.  The MSCPA borrowed $95 million in November 1979 to construct the 55-megawatt coal-fired electric generation station located in Litchfield.  On December 3, 1982, after a successful 24-hour test, the plant was declared commercially available. 

Over the past 30 years, the members refinanced the bonds several times, cutting interest rates in half, and also purchased other diesel generators.

One-by-one the member communities have been paying off their portion of the MSCPA debt.  On March 3rd the MSCPA Board held its monthly meeting in Coldwater and presented the City with a plaque in recognition of paying off its share of the debt.  The MSCPA is now officially debt free.
