The Department of Municipal Services provides all residential refuse collection for the City of Coldwater. The City has rules regarding the use of your toter. Please have all your garbage in plastic or paper bags to eliminate waste from falling out of your toter while it is being dumped. Please be advised items that will not fit in your toter will only be picked up by contacting the DMS to make special arrangements. Any questions can be addressed to the DMS by calling 279-7770.
We are very fortunate to live in a City that offers a free recycling program to residents who have disposal service. Before throwing something away, ask yourself if it could be recycled. If you’re not recycling now, please think about how good it will feel to know you’re helping the environment. To start recycling service, give us a call 279-9531. We'd be happy to drop off recycling bins to you!
(Please keep paper in a separate bin from plastic, glass and metal.)
You can also drop off other recyclable material directly to our offices. Here is a listing of what you can drop off by location:
H.L. Brown Municipal Building - One Grand Street
Electric Service Building - S. Sprague Street
Wastewater Treatment Plant - 100 Jay Street
Freon based appliances must be tagged by an approved Freon removal technician. Appliances may be picked up by the DMS for a fee, you may contact a local scrap yard for disposal or check out the Appliance Rebate Program offered by the CBPU!

Brush collection occurs from April through October on the first Monday of the month. Brush needs to be out before Monday morning but no sooner than the Friday before pickup day. If the first Monday is a holiday, the collection will begin on Tuesday. Once we go by your house, your brush will not be picked up until next month.
No root systems are allowed and the brush is to be 8" or less in diameter. Place in the curb lawn area with ends facing the same direction.
All yard waste must be placed in paper bags. No plastic bags will be accepted. Grass, leaves and yard waste must not be placed on the street. Do not place brush around trees, sign posts or power poles.
You may also drop brush and bagged yard waste off at the Compost Site located at 45 Industrial Avenue.
During the fall leaf pickup season, leaves may be placed in the roadway in most areas, excluding Marshall Street, Division Street and East and West Chicago Street. This is the only time anything is allowed to be placed in the roadway. Check the City’s web site or local media for dates of these pickups.
This service is not intended to replace private contracting of tree and brush removal. The contractor is responsible for the removal of the brush limbs or other material resulting from tree trimming or pruning.
