Help Desk Quick Q & A

Q:  I’m having trouble getting connected to the internet, what can I try to get back online?

A:  If you are on high speed cable modem Internet:

Step #1 - Unplug the power cable from the back of the cable modem.  Verify the lights on the front have gone out.  Wait 30 seconds and then plug the power cord back in.

Step #2 – If you have a wireless router, unplug the power cord from the back of the wireless router.  Verify the lights on the front have gone out.  Wait 30 seconds and then plug the power cord back in.

Step #3 – Turn off your computer.  Wait 30 seconds and then turn the computer back on.  Once the computer is back on, try the Internet and see if the problem has resolved itself.

 

If you are on Dial-Up internet:

Step #1 – Turn off your computer.  Wait 30 seconds and then turn the computer back on.  Once the computer is back on, bring up your Dial-Up and double check your Username and Password.

Step #2 – Unhook the phone cord from the back of the computer and plug it into a telephone.  Make sure you are getting a dial-tone.  If you can still not connect to the Internet please contact the CBPU Internet Help Desk at 278-9276.

 

Q:  What are the E-mail Server Names and what Type of server is it?

A:  The type of server is a POP3 server and both the incoming and outgoing mail server names are the same.  They are: mail.cbpu.com

 

Q:  What is the dial-up telephone number that my computer dials to connect to the Internet?

A:  279-0144 (Note: You do not need the hyphen, 2790144 will work just fine.)

 

Q:  When operating correctly, how many lights should be lit up on my cable modem?

A:  There should be 4 lights on the cable modem.  The power light, cable light & status light should be on solid.  The Ethernet light (or USB light if you are connected via USB) should be flashing.  If the cable light is flashing, trying unplugging the power cord from the back of the cable modem, verify the lights are off, wait 30 seconds and then plug the power cord back in.  If the modem still does not light up properly, you may have a signal problem and need a technician; in which case please call the Help Desk.
