Demographics

Census data states that the population of Coldwater is 12,697.  However, that number includes the population of the state correctional facilities, which have since been transferred back to Coldwater Township.  As of 2001, the population for the City of Coldwater was 10,520, and had a total of 4,058 households. The population of Coldwater is fairly well distributed by age, with the highest population concentrations found in the 25-44 age category with 35.5 percent, and a median age of 35.8 years.

As with most areas in Michigan, the population of the City of Coldwater is comprised of roughly 49.3% men, and 50.7% women.

There is no typical distribution of occupations for Branch County or the City of Coldwater. A little more than one third of the workers are in a technical, sales or administrative support position, and 17.8% in service occupations. The balance of the work force is evenly split between operators and fabricators, precision production and crafts, and managerial and professional occupations, with a median household income level of $33,913.
