[ARCHIVED] The Old US-12 Bridge Is Officially Closed

Recently the City of Coldwater had the old US-12 Bridge undergo an inspection from FTCH in Lansing, MI. The FTCH inspection team performed a visual inspection of the truss from the deck surface as well as below with boat access. They also performed steel thickness measurements from the topside. Many of the primary elements also displayed extreme section loss. The inspectors found the bridge to be an extreme hazard for both vehicles and pedestrian traffic and recommended taking it out of service immediately. As of Friday, August 25, 2017, the Coldwater Department of Municipal Services will be blocking off and restricting all pedestrian access to the structure.

City Manager, Keith Baker said, “Time has taken its toll on the structure. We understand there is a nostalgic sentiment and rich history behind the bridge, and while closing it down wasn’t easy, due to its current condition it is necessary.”

The City of Coldwater wants to remind pedestrians that the warning and closing signs are extremely important and should not be ignored. The City recommends that boaters use caution when traveling under the bridge, and they may do so at their own risk.
